The Two-Day Diet: A Metabolic and Motivational Approach to Rapid Weight Loss
Published in Paperback by Crest (December, 1989)
Authors: Tessa Cooper and Glenn Cooper
Average review score:

Excellent diet book
If you have ever had a hard time dieting and staying motivated to stay on a diet, this is the book for you. I have lost 50 pounds in 12 weeks and have not really felt hungry. I've still managed to lose the weight while eating pizza, donuts and ice cream. Some diet. Two other members of my family have been on this diet and between the three of us we've lost 150 pounds. I highly recommend this book and would love to be able to get in touch with the author to thank them for such a wonderful and life changing book!!!!!!

This diet has worked for me for over six years
This is, hands down, the best diet out there. I have tried them all. Low fat, low carb, just eating less, eating certain foods at certain times -- I've done it all. This is the one that works always, all the time. This is the one I do when I am serious. I've only strayed because it's an older book, and I keep thinking new diets must be better somehow or use better information. I now have a huge collection of very dusty diet books. This book, on the other hand, is tattered and food-stained by being with me constantly, and traveling with me. It works.

The book, written in 1988, begins with a discussion of the genesis of the Two-Day Diet followed by a look at various psychological and motivational aspects of dieting and how the Two-Day Diet differs from other diets. This book states very simply many of the concepts being touted as "new" today.

The plan is then presented. It is a high-protein, low carb plan. However, all the major food groups are represented, including fruit, which you do not get on some other low-carb plans. Plenty of vegetables are allowed and encouraged, especially green vegetables (unlimited salads are allowed) and lots of other veggies. Plenty of meat and dairy is represented, as well. Low-fat cottage cheese is also included, which other low-carb plans do not allow. I get lots of fiber on this diet, which means the plumbing problems associated with some low-carb plans do not occur. In fact, I use this diet to get the digestive system started again after following some other plans. This diet, over the long haul, increases my health and makes me feel very energized. I simply do not get tired on the Two-Day Diet!

The plan is fairly simple. You have two "on" days, followed by one "off" day, followed by two "on" days, followed by two "off" (usually the weekend) days. As anyone familiar with the Three Day Diet making the rounds on the internet, etc., will recognize, this diet is similar, but works better, in my experience, simply because two days are shorter than three. On this diet, you get two "cravers" every "off" day -- which, for me, translates to three candy bars a week! (You get to choose your cravers from a fairly extensive list.) There is a mild ketosis, which turns off the appetite on "on" days, making them very energetic feeling and overall, very easy. Each type of day - "on" or "off" has columns of foods(A,B,C,or D) and you simply choose one from each column. There are also unlimited items such as the familiar diet jello and salad greens.

There is a recipe section, which I have made some use of, however, the diet is so easy that I have no real need for specific recipes for it and my husband and kids have been "on this diet" for years without knowing it! There is also an exercise section, but, truth be told, I have never done the exercises and the weight, literally, melts off overnight. Every time, and even as I get older (I am now in my early forties.) By using this diet over the years, I have never been clinically obese, just overweight, and when the weight gets too much I simply Two-Day. Or rather, I try another diet for several weeks and then come back to the tried and true Two-Day! After weight loss is achieved, there is a method presented to ease back into maintenance eating, which is how I eat usually, and even allows a candy bar every day, if I want to use my daily two cravers on maintenance that way! It is only when I stop the maintenance plan that I begin to regain weight.

In a way, I agree with some other reviewers wishing for an update, however, it is relatively easy to substitute newer items. I wonder what the authors would add or change -- it is perfect as it is, and I'm afraid they would mess it up somehow.

Cheers to all -- and remember, it's never too late to be who you were meant to be -- and this book will definitely help you get there!!

Easy to follow - no counting calories or measuring amounts
This was the easiest diet I've ever been on & it works the best - and I've tried them all!! By the end of each week, you've actually consumed fewer calories than you would have on a restrictive 1000 calorie-per-day diet, yet it feels like you're only dieting 4 days out of each week! The rest of the time, you're able to eat all the foods you love - even fast food! I've never been a happier, less grumpy dieter in my life! (So my husband loved it too!)

You Can Be the Wife of a Happy Husband
Published in Paperback by Chariot Victor Books (January, 1977)
Author: Darien B. Cooper
Average review score:

Best relationship book I have read in 32 years of marriage
This book is definitely MUST reading for every Christian woman--married or single. It is SO refreshing to read a book on marriage that does not teach the woman how to manipulate her husband. This book is very sound Biblically and can be the turning point for even the most difficult situation. I keep re-reading it so I will not forget anything and it amazes me how the content never seems to get stale. Order several copies for friends and family.

Becoming a wife designed by Christ
THIS IS A MUST READ AND USE BOOK! The first time I read this book was right after I became a Christian. I was going through a divorce at the time. God used this book to show me where my actions and attitudes had caused dilemmas in my marriage. Although I am no longer married, I continue to read and use this book to teach me to be submissive to God. After all, for now, He is my husband. Several marriages at our church were healed when women began to apply the Godly principles set forth in this book. I cannot tell you how many copies of this book I have given away to women whose marriages were in need of healing. Reading and applying these principles also helped to improve relations with friends and family. You can't go wrong reading this book!

What a difference this information can make in your life!
I found this book at a thrift shop for a dime after a huge fight with my husband-to-be. I was so desperate and felt that our relationship was over no matter what I did. I started reading this book and I could see exactly why our fight happened as well as what I needed to do to fix it and prevent more problems from occuring. I immediately started applying the principles to our relationship and we are BOTH much happier. I don't think our relationship was this good even in the beginning! I have already loaned it out to a dear friend and know that it will improve her marriage! This book is a God-send and every woman should read it and apply it to their lives! Being a submissive wife makes you a stronger, better, and more beautiful woman and I finally feel secure about myself, my relationship with God and my relationship with my fiance.

Basic Magick: A Practical Guide
Published in Paperback by Red Wheel/Weiser (April, 1996)
Author: Phillip Cooper
Average review score:

It must be great to know it all
Frankly I am surprised by the number of people who like this book. While the magikal techniques are certainly tried and true and the importance of positive mind sets, I was really turned off by his dogmatic and pompous statements. For example he "Categorically states" (his words) that 'astral' entities outside our own creation do not exist. That would include Angels, Devas, Nature spirits, what have you, along with demons and devils. While I would agree that we do indeed, for the most part create our own demons, metaphorically speaking anyway, it is arrogant to essentially say we (that of the physical world) are the only entities in existance, and that there are no other intelligences outside our dense vibration. Also, as one other noted, his dismissal of reincarnation and karma as being "silly dogmas" Well, they aren't even dogmas. But I guess if you treat magik as a science, you best alleviate the metaphysical, which somehow seems a contradiction, to me.

Open-minded and doesn't shove things down your throat.
Mr Cooper writes well. His style would appeal to the scientist and those who feel there should be a rational, logical approach to things, rather than a cloak-and-dagger mystical necessity which would just be silly mumbo jumbo (as the author often calls it). Before opening this book, you'll cower and hide it as if it were a copy of Penthouse! Amazingly, it reveals itself to be as 'respectable' as a book by Freud or Einstein. As a physician, I must confess, I was surprised. More importantly, and almost reluctantly, I have to say that not reading this book and dying would almost be a tragic pity.

You MUST buy this!
For a young pre-med student with a strong belief in "science" as the truth, this book blew my mind. It makes perfect sense, and should be read by anyone who is interested in the concept of human beliefs and emotions affecting their lives. It is also free of the more wishy-washy new-age trappings that keeps so many people away from this sort of thing. A MUST BUY!

The Road to Glory
Published in Paperback by Renaissance Alliance Publishing (January, 2002)
Authors: Blayne Cooper and T. Novan
Average review score:

Loved it!
Blayne Cooper and T Novan are two of my favorite authors and they did not disappoint with "The Road to Glory". I was hooked from the first page and could not put it down until I was finished.

The main characters of Leigh and RJ are well-written, as are the supporting characters, especially Flea, my favorite of the supporting cast. This is a lust-to-love story with plenty of humor, some heart-tugging moments, and a nice twist that sets it off from the rest.

Grab a Coca-Cola, settle down in your favorite chair and enjoy!

A good read with an unusual twist...
Written by the same two authors who brought us the best-selling Madam President, The Road to Glory is wildly different and gives us a feel for the multi-faceted talents Cooper and Novan exhibit both separately and as collaborators.

It begins like a standard girl-meets-girl story. But from clues cleverly inserted by the authors, the reader soon becomes aware that this tale is anything but standard. Feisty trucker Leigh Matthews and old-fashioned, but ready-for-adventure RJ Fitzgerald meet when a strange detour takes the trucker off her regular route. The women discover an instant physical attraction that both are anxious to fulfill. As the story progresses, so does their infatuation with each other, until it surprises them by building into a true love that neither is quite ready to accept or trust.

The strange reactions of RJ's family and friends to the pairing creates a puzzling background that keeps the reader guessing as to its cause. In the meantime, odd tidbits of information are tossed into the mix, stirring up doubts about whether the two will ever be able to get together permanently--and why not?

Searching for these answers keeps the reader eagerly turning pages. The authors have produced an entertaining, sometimes "tongue-in-cheek" story with a delightfully original theme and tied it all together with a comic counterpoint of squirrelly antics. Be ready for a good read with an unusual twist, interspersed with some hearty laughs.

Love these two
As usual Blayne and T. have written a fasinating book. I have read The Road To Glory as well as the others these two have penned together. They are both funny, I mean LOL funny, great plots, and hold your interest. I'm hooked. I will certainly be reading what they write. If you are a avid reader such as myself. Then you need to pick up these authors books. Trust me, you will enjoy.

The Most Romantic Resorts for Destination Weddings, Marriage Renewals & Honeymoons
Published in Paperback by SPI Books (May, 2002)
Authors: Paulette Cooper and Paul Noble
Average review score:

Lots of information I couldn't find elsewhere easily
I'm getting married and I contacted about 10 resorts to find out what they included in their wedding packages and it took me so long and then I found this book and I went through the whole thing in a couple of hours and chose which places my fiance and I might go to for our honeymoon. It was great and saved me a lot of time and the book was inexpensive (and is large and looks beautiful.) My only objection is that it didn't include anything in Europe and we are still considering going to Italy to get married.

A great time and money saver
I just spent an hour going through this wedding book and I couldn't believe how much was in there. I had no idea there were many places where they would marry you for free with a whole ceremony, flowers, etc., if I stayed there. This book told me which ones were good for that and how long I would have to stay to qualify (most were only 3-5 days but a few required a week or more so I scratched those off my list) and who I should contact for wedding information. (I liked that they had e-mail addresses for the wedding people.) I also found all the comments from people who had stayed there interesting and I think they will be very helpful. I've gotten back the [money] I spent for this book back easy!

from Bookviews March 2002
... Here's the lowdown on the special package deals offered by more than 135 elegant hotels and cruise ships in the Caribbean, Mexico, Hawaii and the rest of the US. Find out which resorts will marry you or renew your vows for free if you stay there. Learn what the costs will be, which religious ceremonies are conducted, whether they will secure the marriage license and do the paperwork for you, who to contact, and how far in advance to book. It can range from two hours to six months! This is a great way to plan a great wedding or a ceremony in which to renew one's vows. Don't get married without it!

Mr. Boston Official Bartender's and Party Guide
Published in Hardcover by Warner Books (December, 2000)
Authors: Renee Cooper, Chris Morris, and Warner Books
Average review score:

One of the better guides
Although this is considered by many to be the bible of bartending, I found that it is incomplete. There are many newer drinks that are not mentioned. Unfortionately, many of the guides that have a more complete drink list do not have as much peripheral information. This book is really good at helping a person set up their own home bar. It also has little fun facts about alcohol and toats from around the world.

Go behind just about any bar...what do you find?
Mr. Bostons Official Bartenders Book, thats what you will find. From pubs in Scotland to hole in the wall bars in Hawaii, bartenders all over the world use this book. I find that no matter what, I always find this book usefull and it's always close at hand. The information is given in a style that a bartender understands. It does lack many of the "Trendy drinks" but those are hard to keep up with since you would have to publish a new version each month. But it does contain almost every tradional drink around and even some I havent heard of before!

Excellent bar guide for basics and more.
Best bar guide I've read; concise, excellent variety. What I especially like is that the recipes are from scratch; no powder or liquid mixes. It does list liquor ingredients by Mr. Boston brands but one can easily substitute one's favorite liquors. Also gives good basics on barware, glasses, measurements and more.

Culture Shock Thailand
Published in Paperback by Graphic Arts Center Publishing Co. (May, 2003)
Authors: Robert Cooper and Nanthapa Cooper
Average review score:

A helpful start, but patchy sometimes vague coverage
This book remains the one volume available outside of Thailand that has been written for people who are planning to live, work, or study in that country (several guides of varying utility are available in Thailand). The book provides more info than a typical guidebook about Thai culture and customs, but I have found it not so much outdated as limited in scope. The section on supervising Thai workers does not go beyond putting on a happy face and bringing cream cakes to the office. In practice, one needs a wider repertoire of skills than that. Similarly, the advice on social behavior doesn't go much beyond the stuff that makes people paranoid about offending Thais (e.g., watching where your toes are pointed, not patting people on the head). In addition, the book does not help people with the inevtable "violations" of cultural rules by Thais themselves, nor does it provide simple startegies for adaptation (like learning to watch people and emulate their behavior). The book does not provide useful starting places for adapting to Thai culture---for example, the similarities in cultural codes to what one finds in non-urban parts of the US Midwest. It's surprising that this book has not undergone major revision and that no other has emerged as a replacemnt---it would not be difficult to do.

Out of date but still useful
If you're looking for a short read with add-on value, then this book is for you. It has more depth than what you will find in a Fodor's or Lonely Planet. Part of the book tries to appeal to expats moving their families to Thailand, which is a mistake because you just can't cover the complexities of that chore in a small paperback.

Unfortunately, the book IS out of date. While originally published in the early 80s, it looks more like the early 70s. If I were the author, I would make a serious attempt at revamping the whole thing. I felt like I was reading an old National Geographic.

More than a guidebook, gives an inside look at the Thais
I recently went to Thailand and bought 4 books and Nancy Chandler's map of Bangkok. Of those four books (and the map) this was the most helpful on my trip. It gave me something no other guidebook ever has given me: an inside look at Thai culture and an understanding of my own reactions as a transplant into a totally foreign environment. If you want to go to Thailand and see the tourist attractions, then almost any guidebook will do. But if you want to experience the tradition with an understanding of the history and meaning behind it, or get to know the people on a level closer than just a touristing "farang" [foreigner], this book will open your eyes to the uniquely beautiful ways of the Thais. This is more than just a guidebook, this is an inside look at Thailand you won't find anywhere else.

Stop Committing Voice Suicide
Published in Paperback by Wilshire Book Co (July, 1996)
Author: Morton Cooper
Average review score:

disappointing
In my opinion this book serves as one large advertisement for Dr. Cooper. It gives him a chance to toot his own horn. I would have found it much more useful had it provided a step by step progression of excercises to help people use their natural voice. Even had he let people know how to pick an appropriate voice clinician would have been nice. One good thing is that it does give hope to people with voice problems.

Some reals pearls to be found amongst endless repetition...
There are some invaluable ideas and solutions in this book to help anyone with a voice disorder. The book has certainly helped me. Unfortunately the book is very frustrating in that it has very little structure and endless repetition of Dr Cooper's odds with the establishment. I had to read the entire book because I wanted to be sure of extracting every practical piece of information it contained regarding my voice problems. Apart from that I would have set it down very early.

Dr Cooper endlessly trumpets on about how he pioneered Direct Voice Rehabilitation against critiscm from the rest of the medical community. He devotes a whole chapter to questioning the ethics of the wider medical establishment in respect of the accepted treatment of voice problems. Why? I just want to know about how to fix my voice not join the revolution!

Consequently, the book could have been about a third of the size and a lot more focused on practical solutions for the reader. I have begun to read his other book, "Change Your Voice, Change Your Life" and so far, I fear that this is the better book with essentially the same information that I need.

Travel Magazine Review 1996
Review from Travel MagazineJune 8, 1996This book is addressed to people suffering from sore throat, throat clearing, weak voice, poor projection, pain when talking, stangled voice, voice strain, hoarse voice, lump in throat, tired voice, deep-throat voice, pain when talking, throat tension, or nasality. Much of the book is about coping with strangled voice, medically known as spasmodic dysphonia. A decade ago, the fashionable treatment for this was surgery on the vocal cords, & now it's injection of one of the cords with a small amount of botulinum toxin, a deadly drug, often referred to as botox. The injection causes partial paralysis of a vocal cord, & brings the voice back, on a temporary basis, for varying periods from a month to 6 months. A recent price for the injection was $500. Dr. Cooper is a maverick who decries both surgery & botox, along with a host of palliative treatments that don't help at all. His ultrasimple solution is to first make sure you're breathing in the diaphragm & not the chest, then press the area between the ribs & just at the bottom of the breastbone while humming, then say a word such as "Right" while humming. A resonance should be felt around the nose & lips, indicating that this is the correct placement of the sound. Dr. Cooper believes most vocal troubles come from placing the sound too low in the chest or too high in the head. He cites "miraculous" immediate success with some patients, including celebrities, & good results over time with many others. If you have a voice problem, this is a book you should read.

Little Red Riding Hood
Published in Hardcover by Green Tiger Pr (September, 1991)
Author: Cooper Edens
Average review score:

Too scary for children
I bought this version of the popular fairy tale as a gift for my niece. After I received it, I was horrified to read in detail about how the huntsman cut open the wolf's stomach to look for the grandmother. It then goes on to read, ". . . after a few more slashes a little girl jumped out.." This was not at all what I had envisioned as a gift for a young girl. I wish I had been warned to buy the story from a different author.

Not a great version for younger children
As a teacher, I would not recommend reading this version of Little Red Riding Hood to younger children because I don't think it's suitable for a preschooler, kindergarten, or for a first grader to be listening to the ending: The hunter "raised his gun to shoot but then wondered... so he took out his knife and quickly killed the wolf while he lay sleeping. Then he carefully cut open the wolf's stomach. At the first cut, he saw the red velvet cloak, and after a few more slashes a little girl jumped out."
Also the way this author mentions the deaths: "He ran straight to the bed, and without even saying a good-morning, he ate up the poor old grandmother in one gulp.

"As the wolf said this, he sprang out of bed and ate up poor Little Red Riding Hood!"
I believe the book may be a little more suitable for older kids and it has excellent illustrations. I do recommend reading "Little Red Riding Hood" by Della Rowland. This book has two tales in one. The second tale is called "The Wolf's Tale", where the wolf tells his version of how Little Red Riding Hood actually occured. Della makes the story humorous and also allows you to give children a different perspective of the wolf being a much nicer and funnier character.

Another graet classic
The illustrations in this book are very similar to those of Jan Brett but darker tones used. There is always something hidden w/in the pictures for children to look for and the illustrations help enhance the tale.

I also recommend Lon Po Po.
